Moving TIPS
Reserve Early
Make your reservations as early as possible. That way your chances for your preferred moving day and time are greatly increased.
Pack-Up Before Pickup
Our trucks come with a limited supply of empty boxes and packing supplies. If you need extra boxes and supplies prior to our arrival, please give us a call.
We strongly recommend having all items ready for us when we arrive or consider packing services prior to the move. Break things down and take things apart. However, if you don’t have the time, tools, or know-how our movers will be happy to help on moving day.
Kids Items
Don’t try to get rid of your children’s favorite things before the move – even if it makes it easier. Kids sometimes have a hard time dealing with the change of the move itself.
Packing Strategy
Start packing items you will not need ahead of time. Always tape boxes. Don’t interlock the tops. Pack everything that fits into a box including your pictures, mirrors, TVs, lamps and lampshades. The more things are square and protected the easier they are to stack. Never use duct tape – use packing tape. Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box.
Do Not Forget
Keep access ways like hallways clear of obstacles and stack boxes out of the way near the entrance of the home. Remember to find a safe place for small children and pets. If animals are safe in a bedroom or bathroom, and children are attended to, we’ll have a safer and more efficient working environment. If you live in downtown Salt Lake City, please plan accordingly prior to our arrival. Try to reserve a parking space that involves the shortest walk possible and don’t forget to reserve the elevator.
Rainy or Snowy Days
Please understand that we cannot risk our movers, equipment and especially your belongings on dangerous roads. On the rare occasion where the weather has not permitted us to operate, rescheduling your appointment for another day may be required.
Box Types
Please box items in sturdy moving boxes, preferably new. Avoid open top boxes or un-stackable boxes. Keep boxes light (35lbs or less); the movers will have an easier and more efficient time working with lighter boxes. Plus, you have to lift them later to unpack!
What To Avoid
Don’t pack your items with food or supermarket boxes. You never know what little critter is hiding – or if the box will be strong enough to support your possessions. Choose boxes that will be strong enough to support your possessions.
Packing Delicates
Always pack and unpack breakables over a padded surface. Try to pack all electronic equipment in their original boxes. Otherwise use bubble wrap when packing these items.
Packing Dishes
Always stack dishes upwards when packing. Clearly label all boxes on top and side.
Packing Books
Use only small boxes for books. They get very heavy, very fast. Remember: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
Banned Items
By law, we cannot transport hazardous materials such as gasoline, bottled gases and other flammables, ammunition and explosives.
Truck Capacity
How much will fit the in the truckload depends on quite a few factors. The main ones are: how many items you have and how many non-stackable items there are, such as exercise machines, fragile furniture, fragile boxes, yard furniture/tools etc.
Furniture Tip
As you take apart furniture and other items make sure to tape all parts to the main base. Place all screws and specialized tools in a plastic bag in a box reserved for FURNITURE PARTS.
Important Items
Pack important, valuable and sentimental documents separately, including: children’s health records, medicines, passports, family records, jewelry, priceless items, currency, insurance information and photo albums. Our insurance company always recommends these items be personally transported by the homeowner.
Dedicate The Day
If possible dedicate the day to the move. Remember to get snacks for move day. Make sure to get enough cash to get you through move day. If you plan to have the cable/phone technician, painter, cleaner, contractor, and movers come in on the same day our job will be more difficult and time consuming working around these obstacles.
Cancel Utilities
Schedule disconnect times about a week before your move day — Don’t pay for cable, phone and utilities when you aren’t even there! Also, mail in your change of address form about a week before your move date.
Helping The Movers
Other than pointing us in the right direction your help won’t ever be required on moving day (after all that’s why you hired movers!). But many of our customers chose to make their move more efficient and cost effective by helping on the day of move – this is fine with us! For safety reasons customers cannot enter the back of the truck, step on the ramp, or carry things with the movers (like the other end of a couch for example). But moving boxes out to the side of the truck can definitely help you save some time and money.
Stacking Delicates
Try to group fragile items into the same box to reduce the number of boxes labelled FRAGILE. Moves with lots of fragile boxes make it difficult for the mover to create the base needed to stack your fragiles on top of.
